What does “recorded” mean during my real estate closing?

So what does recording of documents really
mean? In North Carolina, we call it, we’re a race
state meaning it’s a race to the courthouse. So, the first one to record the documents
wins. So we literally race to the courthouse, after
your closing to the register of deeds office where they take the documents and they actually
record them in the registry so that there is evidence forever that you now own the property. Now the recording can generally show up on
the register of deeds computer within 24 hours. That’s proof, once it’s recorded that’s proof
that it is your property and you don’t even really need a copy of your deed anymore like
you did in the old days. Once it’s recorded it’s yours.
