UCalgary Welcome Centre: Transit & Groceries

Welcome to Calgary! This is a short introduction on how to use the Calgary Transit System and how to shop for groceries. To access Calgary Transit, you need to
have a ticket or a pass. Tickets are sold at grocery
stores and various other locations. If you bought the ticket from a store, you must date stamp it at the stamping machine at the station. If you’re buying a ticket at the
station’s ticket vending machine, you don’t need to stamp it. Tickets can be bought at train stations using debit, credit or cash. Don’t forget to collect your ticket from
the slot at the bottom of the machine. Full-time students can collect their UPASS once they pay their tuition. The UPASS gives students unlimited access to all services provided by Calgary Transit. Make sure you wait on the correct side
of the platform for your train. You can see the train destinations on the
electronic sign above. Also, please stay behind the yellow lines
to observe safety regulations C-Train doors do not open
automatically so you need to press the green button on the side of the door in order to embark on the train. Make sure you note which station you have to get off at. Most train stations have bus stops for
passengers wishing to continue their journey. The bus network allows
passengers to access parts of the city inaccessible through the train. Make sure you keep your transit ticket if you wish to continue your trip. If you have your ticket pre-bought, drop it in the transparent box by the
driver’s seat. If you are buying a transfer on the bus, make sure you bring exact change as the drivers do not carry any money to
give back. Franchise grocery stores such as Safeway, Co-op and Real Canadian Superstore are divided into different departments
such as deli, bakery, produce in addition to being organized by aisles. Look out for those signs to find whatever it is you are looking for. When you are ready to pay for your purchase, approach the cash register and put your items on the moving strip. The cashier will check out your
