Preparing to Sell Your Home: Staying Clean While Moving! (Clean My Space)

Preparing to Sell Your Home: Staying Clean While Moving! (Clean My Space)

Moving is something we all have to do at
some point and while it can be stressful, if you manage it effectively, it’ll be a
smooth transition from wherever you are to wherever you’re going. Many of you have
asked me to put together different moving videos. From how to prepare for a move, how to pack, how to unpack, how to organize. So many requests and I’ve wanted
to answer them for so long because I have so much to say on the topic. The issue is, I wasn’t moving. So
fortunately, our producer, Lucas, he just sold this condo and we decided as a team,
that we’re going to share his journey of moving with all of y’all. This video we’re
going to talk about how to prepare your space for a move. So, before you even
think about selling, things that you need to do around the house. We’re going to try
and keep these moving videos fairly brief but there is so much to say on the topic.
So, we’ve put all the gory details up on our website, CleanMySpace.com. So you can be sure to check that out. But
right now, let’s talk about 10 ways to prepare your space for a move. Let’s go.
Decluttering, the first thing you want to do when you’re preparing your space to
sell is to get rid of as much excess stuff as possible, so that you can make your
space look as large as possible. After all, that’s what people are going to be
most interested in. So go through your home and remove
anything that is not absolutely necessary. From decor items, books, DVDs and anything
else lying around that isn’t absolutely pertinent. Cleaning your windows. Natural
light is a huge selling feature of any space. And let’s face it, no one likes
looking out dirty windows. So, if you want your perspective buyers to feel like
they’re walking into a space with tons of natural light, you better make sure those
windows are clean. Where possible, you want to make sure that
you can get your exterior windows clean and obviously your interior ones as well.
Remember those tracks and your window coverings. And if you’re looking for
videos on how to clean your windows, different recipes and techniques and what
tools and products to use, I’ll link all of that down below for you. Because of
course, we have videos on it. Depersonalize, the next step is going to
be challenging but it is so important when it comes to making a sale. Your job here
is to neutralize your space. You want to take out anything that’s personal,
superstitious, religious. Any photographs or knick-knacks or cards or
anything personal. Because your job here is to turn your home
back into a house. You have to help people themselves in your space. Not you in your
space and remember, all of the things that you’re taking out, they’re going to go to
your new home. So, you can set it up and feel right back at home, once
you get there. Walls, baseboards, and vents. This is
where attention to detail can really pay off. Fixing up little marks or scuffs on
your wall is a great way to make your space look clean. Also, remember to clean
the light switch plates and get rid of any of those marks on there. Baseboards are
areas that are often forgotten but really important to keep clean. And finally, your
vents are also something that the pickiest buyers are going to look at. And if you
quickly vacuum them, you give them nothing to scoff at. Clean the kitchen. As I’ve said before,
the kitchen is the heart of the home and it is used as a barometer for how clean
the rest of your space is. So, having it clean is super important. You want
to make sure that all of your exterior surfaces are clean. So, that includes your
countertops, your sinks, your cupboard fronts, your door handles. All the
exterior appliance surfaces. You even want to make sure that the
exhaust filter about your oven is either cleaned or changed entirely. Now, we have
so many different videos about how to clean your kitchen and I will link all of
them below for you. So, you can get lost in a little kitchen cleaning Youtube
rabbit hole. Remove excess furniture. If you want a
great way to free up extra square footage without having to build an addition, all
you need to do is clear out any excess furniture. So, go through each space,
remove things that you though you needed but you really don’t. And just watch how
your room opens up. Remember, you put all this stuff in storage, you can bring it
into your new space. Or you might decide you don’t need it anymore. Deodorize your space. You may or may not
know this, but your home has a unique scent. And while you might not notice it,
other people will. And the last thing you want to do is turn someone off when they
walk in because your scent doesn’t jive with theirs. So, the first thing you can
do is open all of your windows and just let Mother Nature do her work. The next thing you can do is bring in some
nice, neutral, gentle scents into your home by using something like a nebulizer
with essential oils, a lamp berget or even a reed diffuser. We made this one and I’ll
link the video down below for you along with some other nice DIY scent projects. Clean your closets. Remember, almost any
potential buyer is going to be interested in how much closet space they might be
getting themselves into. So, it’s incumbent upon you, to make sure that your
closet has as little clutter as possible and looks as organized as possible. That’s
going to make it look bigger and more appealing. So take out anything that’s out of season
or anything that looks cluttered or sort of out of place. Put that into storage or
get rid of it altogether. Either way, your job is to make the closet look huge. Deep
clean your bathroom. If you want to make a prospective buyer feel right at home in a
flash, have a spotless bathroom. You want them to feel like they can take a
shower or sit on your toilet with absolutely nothing to worry about. So,
this means you got to roll up your sleeves and give your bathroom a good scrubbing.
Get your tub and tiles nice and soap scum free. As well as mold and mildew-free. You
can also consider changing out your shower curtain or your bathmat to make it look
extra clean. Give your toilet a nice thorough scrub and make sure your mirrors
and sinks are shiny and looking new. Clean your carpets. Since floors are such
a large part of a space, making sure that they look perfectly clean is really
important. But if you have carpets, it’s sort of a next level situation because
carpets cling on to odors and stains. So, if you have kids or pets, you don’t want
to give any perspective buyers reasons to turn their nose up or raise an eyebrow. That means, make sure that your carpets
are clean, stain-free and deodorized. And if you can’t get this done yourself feel
free to bring in a profession. Remember, you don’t want to give buyers any reason
to try and lower a price. Whether you’re moving up, downsizing or moving out for
the first time, I hope that this video has helped you get prepared
for that very move. Remember, we’re following Lucas on his
journey from this condo to the new one. So we’ll be getting lots of exciting
moving content out for you over the next little while. But in the meantime, make
sure you let me know your moving questions down below and that way we can incorporate
them into upcoming videos. If you want to see what I’m up to during the week, aside
from cleaning things. You can find me on Instagram. I’m
@MELISSAMAKER. The guy who packed our car up this morning with camera gear while I
did my hair and makeup, he is @THECHADREYNOLDS and together we are
@CLEANMYSPACE. There’s a button down there that lets me know you care, so click it if
you liked this video. And click this button right here to subscribe and begin
your journey to a cleaner life. Thanks so much for watching and we’ll
see you next time. Now, it’s that special time in the video,
the end of the video, where I get to throw you to a couple of other videos I think
you’re going to love. And the first one has to do with cleaning your oven overhead
exhaust filter. Something I talked about in this video and something that we
definitely forget to do. Even if you’re not moving it’s a good thing to take on.
And the next one is to make your own reed diffuser. It is a fun project and it definitely
yields exciting results. Thanks guys and I’ll see you next week

  1. Do you have any moving related questions??

  2. First!

  3. great video!

  4. yes! I'm getting to move!

  5. I watched your clean my room video and it really helped me clean my room it was so messy and know I can't even believe that I've never seen my room so clean before!

  6. We are buying/moving into are first home! I think it would be handy to know a few things that you should do as a new first time home buyer!

  7. Thank you so much I'm actually getting ready to move in 1 more week.

  8. This also applies to switching room in a house too. Well I use the potential buyer part at least.

  9. This is exactly what I was going to ask for! Thank you, Melissa! 🙂

  10. Where did you get this cute metal shoe rack?

  11. 92 likes and 17 views!😂😂🤔

  12. Exhausted just watching the video and thinking about cleaning. Ha! I'm not moving but toying with the idea of getting my place to look the best it can be. I always thought it was weird that you live with nicks on the walls, clutter, little repairs that need done but once you want someone else to buy the house then suddenly, when you are leaving, you spot all these extra things to do that would have made your house nicer to live in.

  13. Hi Melissa – I keep seeing the "Maker Microfiber" used in your videos. Have I missed the Grand Opening sales event?! Tired of purchasing fake microfiber cloths. Ones that feel greasy or don't absorb liquid. Thanks!

  14. what about moving to a different country? How do we make everything we own fit into suitcases and how do we determine what to take?

  15. Is it safe if i move my closet with the clothes inside?

  16. Melissa, you have read my thoughts! Thank you so much for the video. I have several questions about moving. 1. Moving Co and movers. Your tips to chose the right Co. What we should looking for? 2. Packing process. When to start? What we can pack in advance? How to estimate how many boxes and other materials we need? Packing tips. 3. Move in home evaluation and cleaning. I have more details on this question. We plan to move to bigger home, it was maintained nicely, but the owners had a mature cat. We definitely want to eliminate this scent and prepare this home to move in (may be some painting job will be required). What is your recommendations on the process as we don't want to double pay, for example,  for carpet special treatment with enzymes and carpet cleaning, but then ended up with the full carpets replacement. What should be the first, what the next , etc  (how to plan the order of each step:  visual home evaluation, find the urine spots with special lamp, painting job, carpet cleaning job, move in cleaning).

  17. my mom used to sell houses and she used to tell people it was mega important to clean and keep it that way and make it smell good. I think this is a great series. thanks😃

  18. I live in an apartment and not planning to move any time soon but just the same, I really enjoy watching videos on selling and buying homes.  I enjoyed this one and look forward to the others.  By the way Melissa, I think you are funny by stating you are first in the comment section.  Cute.

  19. Awesome 🙂 I love this video 🙂

  20. As soon as you're ready, you don't wanna sell your home anymore 😉

  21. Make more moving videos💗💗💗💗

  23. I was moved by this video.

  24. Thank you for the video. When should I start packing if I have a deadline for moving houses? How to be efficient about it?

  25. I'm not planning on moving..in fact, I don't even own a place. Yet here I am, haha

  26. Full Lord of the Rings special edition DVDs? 01:22 You guys get move and more awesome with every video. Keep up the good work!

  32. This is perfect, I am moving next sunday!!

  33. when do we get another video of you with no shoes ?

  34. We JUST moved from an apartment to a house a month ago lol. A little late for me personally but saved it so in 5-10 years if we move Ill have this 🙂

  35. This is great for me, as I shall be moving next year, so I'm going to bookmark the whole series 😀

  36. My family is moving soon! This series couldn't have come at a better time. I have the boxes and materials, and I've begun the packing process. But now I'm just overwhelmed with lack of organization. How can I make the transition and unpacking into our new home a smooth and organized one?!? I'll have a toddler at my feet…. And I'll be 8 1/2 months pregnant. This needs to be as low stress as possible. Thank you for your help!!!

  37. Perfect!! Just in time for this video! My question will be how do you move things for those houses that has 2nd floor? Since we will be moving to a 2 story house, Is there a better/easier way of moving things up the stairs? Thank You Melissa!

  38. Melissa, when are the cloths being released? Also, that is one of the cutest doggies I've ever seen. I know you said a while back that Chad turned you into a cat lady, but you looked reallllly happy holding the dog in the pic! Any chance of you dogsitting, or will Malee and Paislee but the kibosh on that?

  39. this isn't cleaning related, but ppl please take good pictures of your place!

  40. Melissa I have a question about the baking soda carpet thing. I have tried it a few times with my dyson upright vacuum and dyson handheld and I found that the baking soda worked for the carpet issue but then it caused a whole other mess in my vacuums and got clogged in areas I couldn't clean out. You got any helpful advice? Or was I using too much baking soda?
    Thanks! Love your videos!

  41. Hi Melissa….great info as always! Sold last home in 4 days! Been here for 38 years and the thought of ever moving out is not something I would like to do….but…you never know. Ex Realtor here. Saw you on Marilyn…she's great and you did wonderful! Hugs to you from Fort Langley BC oxoxox

  42. can you do a video on how to clean up vomit/pee/poo from pets?

  43. Yes perfect!!! Can you do a video and how to pack. We just bought a home and moving out in 30 days! Eeek!'

  44. We have sold two houses in the past four years — one went for listing price in Texas during the mortgage crisis when very few similar size houses in the neighborhood were selling and the one in Hawaii sold in three days well above list price when a bidding war broke out. After our renters moved out of a house, we hired a very good local contractor to refurbish each house: re-painted all walls and ceilings with neutral taupe/beige tones, installed high-end ceiling fans/light fixtures in bed rooms and living areas, replaced all door knobs and cabinet knobs with trendy brushed nickel ones, installed fancy blown glass pendant lights above breakfast bar, replaced all carpeting with Berber-type in darker taupe/beige tones to coordinate with wall paint, replaced all vinyl flooring in bathrooms and kitchens with higher quality industrial grade vinyl designed to mimic wood flooring, installed plantation shutters on all windows, did custom framing around every bathroom mirror, installed trendy styles of bathroom lighting fixtures and replaced all the kitchen appliances with trendy stainless steel versions. In one of the houses we coated the garage floor with speckled concrete paint and painted the garage walls so it could serve as a mild weather party room. Refurbishing cost about $40K per house and was recouped (way more than recouped for the Hawaii house) when the deals closed.  The bottom line is you have to spend money to make money selling a house and today's house buyers want turn-key perfection and the look of a brand new house because most don't have handyman skills to do simple upgrades or the design sense to choose the right colors and finishes.

  45. thanks

  46. Please do a quick review on that Dyson!! I want to buy it but it's so pricey I don't know if it'll be worth it. I mainly have wood floors and some thick shag shag! Thanks again!

  47. can you do a video on how to clean and wash the sofa ? my cat loves to scratch all over the sofa fabric

  48. This is a great video. Realtors out there take note and have your sellers watch this!
When I sold my house, I was lucky enough to have a place where I could send off half of all our stuff. Half of all closets, kitchen stuff, toys, books, even cleaning products. Always open the windows and if it's too cold, something on the stove to smell like baked pie or cookies! No stinky or cleaning product smells
    Great ideas "Clean my Space"

  49. Suggestion to help sellers: If you have a dining room (if not use kitchen) set the table for company, with flowers (alstroemeria's last the longest). It makes the potential buyer think about how they would entertain in your space.

  50. Hi Melissa,

I really like your videos and tips. Can you make a video on how to properly clean dog accidents (vomit/pee/fecal stains).

    Thanks

  51. how to cleans stains on paint on walls like hands marks, dirt

  52. WHAT???? You've got producer?

  53. How to clean Bottle cork lid

  54. What a coincidence!! Myself and my fiance are moving into a flat soon !! Our first buy!! This couldn't come at a more perfect time!! 🙂 🙂 I love your video's and inspired me to be a more organised cleaner!! Your tips and tricks have helped me a lot too!! Thank You so much and I can't wait for the upcoming moving video's!!

  55. I am a college student and your videos have really helped me keep my small spaces clean and tidy! I have some more laundry questions specifically regarding towels. Can you wash kitchen cloths with bath/face towels? Can you wash microfiber cloths with regular towels? At what temperature? Since I live in a small space I do not have a huge amount of each type of towel where I can do a load of laundry, especially since it is quite expensive because I have coin laundry. Can I just launder everything together? Thanks!

  56. Hello Guys

  57. Moving sucks!!!!!!!!!! 😠😠😠😠😠😠😠

  58. We recently moved a family of 4. We decluttered so much we had to rent a 10×5 storage unit and fill it. Mostly with toys!!!!!

  59. Mellissa I could really use your help. You are my cleaning "guru go to" if you will.. With that being said, I don't even know if you will see or even respond. My kitchen floors are difficult to describe. They are some type of tile /stone/ I don't know. Each square is extremely heavy to lift(there are extras they were Not installed correctly and once looked clean with a shine to now having cracks and holes which have dirt in those cracks. ( I've used the grout cleaning method video btw and that helped to lift some of that yuk) I would be ever so grateful love to know your thoughts about how to get these floors cleaned . I've tried almost everything.. But they just are dull and lack in luster. Any Suggestions? Thanks so much! Have a great Weekend!!

  60. How about moving pets (specifically, my four cats)? I'm moving 1-1/2 hours away and I'm not sure whether to move them a day or two ahead of time or on the "big" moving day. I'm concerned that I won't be able to capture them all to corral them into their pet carriers if I wait. They're super smart and will scatter, I just know it. Help!!

  61. Hi Melissa, I am so happy to find your channel. This video is great. I used your tips to make sure our old home was perfectly clean. Our landlord was impressed. 😀
Can I request a similar video? Could you please give us some tips for those who are moving into a new place? I'm struggling to put things in order. Any ideas how to clean and organise without much stress would be appreciated. Just an idea for your videos. Thanks and congratulations. Big hello from New Zealand. xx

  62. We are moving from our rented house in the next couple of months, all furniture is our own, could you do a video on how to return the empty property in the best clean condition? There's a lot more to clean when the space is empty..

  63. I couldn't find this on the blog! :/ Anyone find it?

  64. Thanks!!

  65. Hi Melissa, where can I purchase small vacuum you have used in this video to clean vents

  78. Very good tips!!! I need to send your video to all my clients.

  80. Good advice, more people selling should watch your video. I'm looking to buy right now & some of the homes I've seen over the past 3 weeks could have used a lot better presentation & maybe would have swayed me a little to move on it.

  81. 😅 My bf was already thinking of selling when we got together, and I don't want to move into his current house cuz there's too much of his last two gfs in the place. We need a place we can make Ours. So he said for me to learn everything I can to help him sell, and he wants me to help him stage the place when the weather warms up.

It's scary but exciting! I've never gotten to this point with any of my exes; home ownership. Any cohabitation was done as renters.
