Leveling Neighborhoods & Outlawing Rent Control, A Look Back At Boston Housing

TONIGHT AS WE CELEBRATE 70 YEARS ON THE AIR, THEY BEGAN BOSTON NEXT. WE ARE LOOKING AT THE ISSUES THAT HAVE IMPACTED THE RISK SINCE OUR FIRST BROADCAST AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO CHALLENGE OUR COMMUNITY. SO WE START WITH HOUSING AND HOW PAST DECISIONS HAVE SHAPED OUR CITY INTO WHAT IT IS TODAY. DAVID LOOKS AT WHAT IS NEXT FOR HOUSING. THIS IS GREATER BOSTON. AUSTIN IN THE LATE 1950s MANY SITES ARE FAMILIAR. AND WHAT ISN’T SO FAMILIAR IS THE CONDITION OF MUCH OF THE HOUSING. A PROGRAM PRODUCED IN 1957 A GRIM PICTURE OF LIFE IN MANY OF BOSTON NEIGHBORHOODS. SO, BOSTON REALLY IS A TIRED OLD CITY. WELL, THERE IS A PLAN TO CHANGE ALL THAT. IT IS CALLED URBAN RENEWAL. ENTIRE NEIGHBORHOODS WOULD BE DEMOLISHED TO MAKE WAY. SO KHADI INSTANCES WERE SOLD AS A VERY POSITIVE THING. FOR BETTER HOUSING. 57,000 HOMES ARE IN THOSE NEIGHBORHOODS. BUT, A LONGTIME COMMUNITY ACTIVIST TAKES ISSUE WITH THAT DESCRIPTION AND HIS DECISION. WELL, TALKING ABOUT LIVING THERE. YOU KNOW HE CALLED IT HOME. THIS IS WHAT THE NEIGHBORHOOD LOOKED LIKE AFTER WAS LEVELED. TODAY, THE AREA HAS BEEN REINVENTED. KING SAYS HE IS MISSING THE DIVERSITY OF HIS BOYHOOD HOME. AND, THAT THE BEST NEIGHBORHOOD. THE SAME IS TRUE FOR THE WEST END, A CULTURALLY DIVERSE NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAR FOR NEW DEVELOPMENT. IN IF YOU HAVE EVER BEEN TO THE GARDEN, THERE’S A VERY GOOD CHANCE THAT THIS ONE BRICK BUILDING STANDING THERE ALL BY IT ALL. IN THE BACK DECK — BACK IN THE DAY, THEY WERE FILLED WITH THESE JUST LIKE THIS ONE. BUT ALL THOSE HOMES WERE LEVELED MAKING WAY FOR APARTMENT BUILDINGS. WELL, THERE’S ANOTHER HOUSING PROBLEM BECAUSE THOSE WHO ARE LIVING THERE, PRIMARILY RENTERS, CAN’T AFFORD TO LIVE THERE. JUMP AHEAD WHEN THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING TAKES ANOTHER BLOW. THEY OUTLAWED RENT CONTROL. IF YOU HAVE LOW INCOME HE MAY QUALIFY. BUT AFTER JANUARY 1997, ALL OF THE CONTROL IS GONE. THE HOUSING SHORTAGE CONTINUES TODAY DESPITE WHAT SEEMS LIKE A FLOOD OF NEW BUILDINGS. PEOPLE CAN’T AFFORD TO LIVE IN THE PUBLIC HOUSING. REALLY WEALTHY PEOPLE CAN AFFORD THESE. AND OF COURSE, HOUSING IS CRITICAL. AND, WE LOOK AT INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS BEING DISCUSSED TO CREATE HOUSING FOR ALL INCOMES AND ALL DEMOGRAPHICS. I EVEN WENT DOWN TO NEW YORK CITY TO CHECK OUT A DIFFERENT STYLE OF APARTMENT LIVING. WE ALSO WANT TO HEAR THE STORIES OF WHAT YOU’RE GOING TO IT COMES TO HOUSING IN OUR AREA. AND WE WANT TO SHARE YOUR STORIES ON AIR AND ONLINE.
