There’s a misconception that selling real estate is easy, that becoming a rockstar real estate agent just involves getting your license, printing up some business cards and poof you’re making money instantly list a few houses rake in the cash. Except real life gets in the way of this fantasy. Getting your license isn’t all that hard, which means just about anybody can do it. You’ve got a lot of competition, just having a license does not make you a rockstar real estate agent or make you any money. So, how do you get rock star status? Here are five tips to help boost your career into the stratosphere. My name is Mindy jensen and I’m the community manager here at BiggerPockets.com I’m also a licensed real estate agent in the state of Colorado I can’t tell you how many times I call up an agent and it goes straight to voicemail actually I can it’s a hundred percent of the time if you want to stand out from the crowd answer your phone when it rings. Yeah I get that you’re with a client and you cant answer the phone right away. I’m not talking about that I’m talking about when the phone rings and you’re not doing anything. Pick it up, don’t let it go to voicemail. You make money when you answer your phone. Do you know another way you can make money? Answer your email. Most of your clients are going to be online now and they’re going to use the method they’re most comfortable with to contact you. If they send you an e-mail answer it and when you open up that email listen to what your clients are asking for. What you want to sell them is not important, its what they want to buy. Referrals are your lifeblood. Service your client now and they’ll refer you to all of their friends. One of the best ways you can help your client is by knowing your market. Preview properties there’s always an agent preview where you can go and see it before your clients do. You walk into the property, you know a little bit more about it than just walking through what’s this i don’t know where that goes? Being knowledgeable about your market is also knowing what property is a good price and when it’s overpriced. I’ve got a house in my neighborhood right now that is at least fifty thousand dollars overpriced because the agent doesn’t know the area she knows her area which is significantly higher prices online – that house has been sitting on the market for 76 days in the hottest market my city’s ever seen. My last tip for you is to treat your business like the business it is. This isn’t a hobby you need to treat this as though this is your sole source of income because if you’re not on salary unless you have another job someplace else you are not getting paid unless you sell a house. Your job is to help people purchase the most expensive thing they’re ever going to buy. So you need to be knowledgeable, you need to be professional, and you need to present an aura of I’ve done this before and I can do it again. Some things you should definitely do are get professional business cards printed, don’t put them on your computer at home, get a professional website developed, don’t let your boss’ nephew’s cousin’s do it for you. Hire somebody that that’s their job. Create a social media presence so that you are everywhere. Think about your market right now. Who’s the top agent that you can think of? Their advertising everywhere so get yourself out there. Becoming a rockstar real estate agent is more than just having your license, it’s listening to your clients needs, answering your phone, answering your email, knowing your market, and truly treating your business like the business that it is. Following these tips will have you standing out from the crowd and you’ll be playing lead guitar at Madison Square Garden in no time.
