Home rental scams

(PHIL) LOOKING FOR A RENTAL HOME CAN BE PRETTY STRESSFUL FOR MANY REASONS… THE LEAST OF WHICH IS FINDING A HOME THAT’S AVAILABLE AND IN YOUR PRICE RANGE. SCAMMERS ARE NOW TARGETING VULNERABLE PEOPLE LOOKING TO RENT IN INCREASING NUMBERS. LARRY FLOWERS REPORTS. WHEN MURFREESBORO RESIDENT MELISSA KING AND HER FAMILY ARRIVED AT A RENTAL HOME ON MARIAN LANE, THEY KNEW IT WAS THE ONE. “THIS IS OUR DREAM HOUSE,” KING SAID. “MY KIDS WERE EXCITED, AND SO WAS I.” AN AD POSTED ON ZILLOW HAD IT LISTED FOR $900 A MONTH. “THERE ARE THREE BEDROOMS, THERE’S A BONUS ROOM,” KING SAID. “I MEAN, IT HAD EVERYTHING WE DIDN’T EXPECT TO HAVE.” THE MAN WHO KING THOUGHT WAS THE LANDLORD ARRANGED FOR HER TO SEE IT. THERE WERE MAINTENANCE WORKERS THERE, SO THEY WENT INSIDE AND LOOKED AROUND. “HE TOLD US A TIME AND DAY TO COME AND WE CAME, WE VIEWED THE HOUSE,” KING SAID. “WE LIKED IT ON SPOT, AND WE CALLED HIM AND SAID WE WANT THE HOUSE.” SHE TRANSFERRED $900 FOR THE DEPOSIT VIA WALMART TO THE MAN IN NEW YORK WHO CLAIMED HIS SON HAD CANCER. AFTER GETTING THE MONEY, HE STOPPED ALL COMMUNICATIONS WITH HER. TURNS OUT IT WAS ALL A SCAM. “I’M REALLY UPSET BECAUSE THIS TOOK EVERYTHING WE HAD TO GET, TO THINKING THAT THIS WAS THE HOME WE HAD BEEN PRAYING FOR,” KING SAID. THE HOME WAS FOR RENT BY AMERICAN HOMES. THERE IS EVEN A SIGN ON THE DOOR WARNING OF HOME RENTAL SCAMS. PROPERTY MANAGEMENT, INC. IS ALSO A HOME RENTAL COMPANY WHO RENTS HOMES FOR INVESTORS ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY. THEY’VE SEEN AN UPTICK IN HOME RENTAL SCAMS. “FIRST AND FOREMOST, NEVER EVER, EVER GIVE MONEY TO ANYBODY YOU HAVE NOT PERSONALLY MET,” SAID PMI PROFESSIONAL PRESIDENT SCOTT ALBERNATHY. “IF YOU CANNOT SHAKE THEIR HAND AND SAY THIS IS WHO WE ARE, AND THIS IS WHERE WE ARE, NEVER GIVE THEM MONEY.” ALBERNATHY SAID HE’S WARY OF WEBSITES LIKE CRAIGSLIST WHERE ANYBODY CAN PLACE AN AD. “STICK WITH THE PROFESSIONALLY MANAGED PROPERTIES,” ALBERNATHY SAID. “THOSE ARE GOING TO BE BOOTS ON THE GROUND IN YOUR AREA THAT ARE MANAGED PROFESSIONALLY. THEY ARE GOING TO HAVE PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTING AND THEY HAVE TO COMPLY BOOTS ON THE GROUND IN YOUR AREA THAT ARE MANAGED PROFESSIONALLY. THEY ARE GOING TO HAVE PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTING AND THEY HAVE TO COMPLY WITH THE TENNESSEE REAL ESTATE COMMISSION WHERE A NORMAL EVERYDAY LANDLORD DOESN’T HAVE TO.” “QUITE A BIT SCARCITY OF PROPERTY TO RENT, WHICH MAKES IT DIFFICULT FOR FOLKS TO FIND PLACES TO RENT,” ALBERNATHY SAID. “WE GET ABOUT 400 LEADS A WEEK FOR PEOPLE LOOKING TO RENT SOMETHING AND 10 AVAILABLE, SO WE CAN’T SERVICE EVERYBODY.” KING IS ABOUT TO HAVE SURGERY AND WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO A HOUSE TO COME HOME TO WITH HER KIDS. “IT’S SAD THAT A GROWN MAN WOULD TAKE ADVANTAGE OF CHILDREN LIKE THAT FOR HIS OWN PERSONAL GAIN,” KING SAID. TRT: 1:45 OC: …OWN PERSONAL GAIN.” (PHIL) THAT WAS LARRY FLOWERS REPORTING. HOME RENTAL EXPERTS HAVE SOME TIPS TO AVOID GETTING SCAMMED: FIRST… NEVER WIRE MONEY TO SOMEONE OUT OF STATE. SECOND… USE A LOCAL PROFESSIONAL RENTAL MANAGEMENT COMPANY. THIRD… SEARCH ONLINE FOR THE ADDRESS TO SEE IF THE HOME SHOWS UP WITH DIFFERENT RENTAL PRICES. AND REMEMBER… IF SOMETHING SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT PROBABLY IS.
