Dr. Laura Novoa – Boys Town Residential Treatment Center

Hi my name is Laura Novoa. I’m a child and adolescent psychiatrist. I’ve been here at Boys Town since 2000. I wanted to work with children and in child
psychiatry you have the opportunity to really spend a lot of time with them and listen to
them, talk to them, really get to know them. They are all different. I mean, not one is the same but they’re
full of life and they have their whole life ahead of them. I feel like there is so much potential, you
know, for their years to come and so helping them can really affect their life and have
an impact on their life. The Boys Town program is unique because it
is very much a team approach. Not only a team approach for everyone that
is involved here, but also involving the parents. Well the goal for every child here at Boys
Town is to be doing the best that they can. You know here in this structured environment
as a child psychiatrist one of our roles is to prescribe medications. One of my goals for the kids often is to be
doing the best they can with the littlest amount of medication and the day that the
kid comes off the medication and they come back in and say look how well I’m doing,
that’s great. The key is really the structure and consistency
here. Nurturing, it’s a safe place and you know
everyone working together I think is probably the biggest thing about the success here at
Boys Town. Everyone here is good to work with. We’re very open. We want the parents involved even while their
child is here. We want them to be very much a part of their
treatment, even though we know they’re not living at home. My favorite part of the job is the kids you
know, again the positive reaction that they can have when they come in and say you know
I’m better or this work or unhappy being here or even I did so well I guess I’m going
home. Yeah, those are really rewarding times.
