Building a Healthier Gwent

Building a Healthier Gwent

The publication of my report, “Building a
Healthier Gwent” is the start of a conversation with the people who live
and work in Gwent about how together we can achieve the ambition that people
live more of their lives in good health in all of our communities. Last year we
celebrated the 70th anniversary of the of the NHS. But despite the many achievements of the NHS it has not changed the fact that people in some of our communities live
18 years longer in good health than they do in other communities. The reason for
that 18-year gap is the difference between our communities in the number of people who live the kind of healthy lifestyles that prevent heart disease,
cancer and lung disease. The influences on our health are complex but we know what they are and we know what works to help people live their lives in good
health. The places where we live, work, learn and
play have a strong influence on our opportunities to live our life in good
health. Being connected to other people as part of a strong supportive community
has an important influence on our health but we know that one in five people in
Gwent tell us that they feel lonely How easy we find it to access services
and facilities that help us to stay healthy and to prevent disease is
another important influence on our health. In my report I have set out the
actions that taken together would achieve the ambition of people in all of
our communities living more of their life in good health. There are many good
things already happening across Gwent and we need to build on those things and all
play our part. Please get involved in the conversation, because if we all do one
thing together, we can build a healthier Gwent and together we can achieve the
ambition that people in all of our communities live more of their life in
good health
